Mother’s Day is a time to honor, respect and thank our mothers for giving birth to us. On this day we explicitly express our appreciation to our moms for their acts of love and kindness over the years. Now, I know we don’t all share the same sentiments about our mothers. Like any other relationship, mother-daughter bonds sometimes endure growing pains. As humans we’re sometimes inclined to hang on to resentments and harbor grudges from the past instead of just reconciling and moving forward. The Bible commands us to “honor our fathers and our mothers.”
To honor our parents means we give high value and respect to them. While this is something we should be doing every day of every year, Mother’s Day is simply a day to acknowledge their love and sacrifice and to tangibly show our appreciation.
I love my mom, and I have never doubted her love for us. As I get older, I have started seeing my mom through a woman’s eyes and as I start walking in her shoes with my own children, I love and respect her even more. I’m now fully able to appreciate her unbending and unconditional love and her unwavering desire to see her kids succeed.
Today, my family and I have two mothers who have provided us with love, commitment and support throughout the years. One of course is my own mother, on the left in the pictures below, and my mother-in-law on the right. Born in different decades in Jamaica, both were fierce supporters and protectors of their children when we were young and loved and natured with “a firm hand.” They were always there for us as kids, and they are still our biggest cheerleaders today.
So, as we all celebrate Mother’s Day, let’s show our love and appreciation to our mothers whether they are still here with us or not, by treating them like the queens that they are and thanking them for just being our moms. Chocolates and flowers are an added bonus!

To all the other mothers in my life, my sisters, my aunts, my cousins, my friends, mothers on this blog and women who are mothers by bond or in spirit and action, Happy Mother’s Day to you all!
